Hi Martin,

By chance did you try Google? I just tried "emerson UPS" and there were
a lot of hits; some of them are replacement battery vendors who might
know the answer.

Short answer: Most likely red=positive.

Take a look at the printed circuit board the wires connect to.
Sometimes the printed circuit board is marked on either the foil side or
the component side.

You may also be able to deduce which is which by tracing the + and -
wires to the first electronic components they go through. If one of
them goes directly to the case of one of the power transistors (but the
other doesn't) and the transistor is PNP (I can't remember what a 2N3055
is) then if the case of the transistor is the collector (as opposed to
emitter or base) that will be the negative side. I think.

In a car, black is negative and red is positive. At least on my Yugo.

This is tricky stuff. In general, black means "hot" with the other wire
often connected to neutral (although sometimes it's a switch leg) *but*
"hot" can be either positive or negative so in your case it's unclear.

Some people think of black as the ground (0 volts) wire with the red
wire being "hot", and some think of black as the "hot" (120 volts) wire
with a white wire being connected to ground.

With your UPS it is possible (in my opinion "likely") that neither side
is "ground". Check the schematic if you have one.
