Parsing your XML

  • An XML parser reads a document and creates an in-memory model
  • A parser checks that the document is well formed
  • A validating parser checks the document against a DTD
  • A non-validating parser won’t use a DTD, even if one is available
  • Parsing ceases on the first error
  • Several free parsers are available
  • Parsers are primarily intended to be merged with a larger program
    • But most offer some stand-alone functionality
