What is XML?

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a streamlined subset of SGML. XML defines the structure of data. It opens the door to shaping and controlling data without regard to the platform or operating system.

    • XML documents are human readable
    • XML is extensible — you can define your own “tags”
    • XML documents are “future proof”
    • Unicode-based
    • Subset of a standard that has existed since 1986 (SGML)
