From this month's "Paul Smedley has been busy" file:

  1. Samba version 3.0.26a has been updated as of 09/21/2007. Provided are both the Samba server, and a client plugin for the NetDrive filesystem, which supports 64-bit file I/O with NDFS 3.0 or higher. It allows you to mount SMB or CIFS shares on OS/2 without the need of NetBIOS (IBM LAN Manager or IBM Peer). Go to http://svn.netlabs.org/samba.
      NOTES:
    1. You will need the GCC runtime (LIBC063.DLL); for that, go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip.
    2. Unlike the older Netlabs port, this version does not require Security/2.
    3. Some utilities updated by Herwig Bauernfeind as of 09/05/2007 are at http://members.aon.at/herwig.bauernfeind/samba/index.html.

  2. CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) version 1.3.2, with ESP GhostScript 8.15.4 and Gutenprint 5.1.3, has been released as of 09/25/2007. The goal of CUPS is to improve the printing support in eComStation. You can print using the command-line tools, or try the CUPS port driver. There is a list of printers that are potentially supported; those mentioned as working with CUPS or Gutenprint should work. Go to http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/CupsPort.

DFSee, which has been presented by Tony Butka at previous SCOUG general meetings, is now at version 9.01 as of 09/10/2007. It is an FDISK, display, analysis, and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It includes the ability to resize FAT and FAT32 partitions, and has JFS and LVM support.     NOTES:
  1. If you are using the version 8.xx series, you can either upgrade to version 8.17 (also as of 09/10/2007) for free, or upgrade to version 9.01.
  2. DFSee is shareware. Registration is at Mensys (http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_DFSee.html).
  3. There is a zip file version, and now a version that can be installed using WarpIN as well.

File Commander/2 version 2.30-dev has been updated as of 09/18/2007. This is a Norton Commander clone for OS/2. Go to http://silk.apana.org.au/fc2development.html.

SmartCVS version 6.0.5 has been released as of 09/10/2007. This is a Java CVS GUI client, with features such as built-in File Compare/Merge, Transaction Display or List Repository Files, and more. It requires Java 1.4.1 or higher. Go to http://www.syntevo.com/smartcvs/.

SmartSVN version 3.0.4 has been released as of 09/25/2007. This is a Java Subversion GUI client, with features such as built-in file compare/merge, Change Report or Tag and Branch handling, and more. It requires Java 1.4.1 or higher. Go to http://www.syntevo.com/smartsvn/.

Mr. Message has been updated as of 09/22/2007. This is an instant messenger client which is capable of communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR protocol. Go to http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage/.

PHPMyAdmin version 2.11.1 has been released as of 09/20/2007. This is a set of PHP scripts to administer MySQL over the web. Go to http://www.phpmyadmin.net/home_page/index.php.

MultiZilla version 1.8.3.3k has been released as of 09/23/2007. This is an extension that adds more features to the tabbed interface in SeaMonkey. Go to http://multizilla.mozdev.org/.

A driver for NVidia chipset network adapters is at version 0.0.4 as of 09/09/2007. Use search key nveth on Hobbes.

Amouse version 2.80.01 has been released as of 09/22/2007. This scroll mouse driver has USB support, improved Logitech support, a XCenter widget, and more. Go to http://www.nbsoftware.de/sw_ms_en.htm.

bootAble version 4.5.2 has been released as of 09/08/2007. This is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF, and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/bootAble/.

  1. NcFTP version 3.2.1 has been updated as of 09/10/2007. This FTP client supports resuming uploads and downloads, tab completion, and some command-line utilities. Go to http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/index.php?page=ncftp.

    2. According to Steve Wendt, the MPUT command isn't working correctly in this build.

  2. PHP version 5.2.4 has been released as of 09/11/2007. It is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development, and can be embedded into HTML. Go to http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/index.php?page=php-5.

  3. Apache version 2.2.6 has been released as of 09/11/2007. It is the premier Web server of the Internet; newer versions use multi-threading and offer big performance improvements. Go to http://www.smedley.info/os2ports/index.php?page=apache2-v2-2-4.

FTP Server version 1.30 has been released as of 09/08/2007. Compared to the standard FTPD that comes with OS/2, this one has better security controls, together with extra features such as symbolic links. Use search key ftpser on Hobbes, or go to http://eepjm.newcastle.edu.au/os2/FtpServer.html.

FTPBox/2 version 0.03 has been released as of 09/01/2007. It is a simple FTP client based on REXXFTP API. Use search key ftpbox on Hobbes.

Larsen Commander version 1.6 Milestone 3 has been released as of 09/05/2007. This is a nice GUI Norton Commander clone with many features. Go to http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/, or use search key lcmd on Hobbes.

NDPISO version 2.5 has been released as of 09/05/2007. This is a plugin for NetDrive, allowing you to mount ISO (CD-ROM) images. Use search key ndpiso on Hobbes.

Maul Publisher version 3.13 has been released as of 09/14/2007. It is billed as "the world's first professional desktop publisher for OS/2". It will automatically take care of page numbering in folding booklets, reversal of margins for facing pages, page numbering offsets where you don't want to start from Page 1, reversal of margins for top-bound booklets and top-folding booklets, centering margins on printers with odd margins, and multi-way folding sheets and maps. In addition, you have full control of column, row, gutter, and centre gutter guides, including the automatic adjustment of page offsets when a number of sheets are bound into a folding booklet.     NOTES:

  2. There is also a language translation toolkit, so that anyone interested can provide translations for their native langauages; for that, use search key maulettk on Hobbes.

PDFMergeNX version 2.0 test has been released as of 09/18/2007. This is an application for manipulating PDF and PostScript files; it provides a graphical interface on top of GhostScript, XPDF, and ePDF. Go to http://members.aon.at/herwig.bauernfeind/pdfmergenx/.

Guiffy, which has been presented at SCOUG general meetings in the past, is now at version 8.2 as of 09/10/2007. It is a file compare / merge (diff-like) tool with a GUI implemented in Java. Go to http://www.guiffy.com/.

Java Movie Database version 1.3.5 has been released as of 09/20/2007. This is a Java-based application for searching and getting information about movies and actors, getting the data from the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). Go to http://www.jmdb.de/.

General Network Utilities has been updated as of 09/19/2007. This is a powerful Internet diagnostic toolkit featuring several tools designed to help you quickly identify problems, locate where the problem is, and gather data which can be used to solve the problem either directly or through your ISP. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/gnu/.

The RAR archiver is now at version 3.71 as of 09/21/2007. It is a command-line compression utility, with tight general and multimedia compression, recovery record option management of non-RAR archives, RCVT (aRchive ConVersion Tool), and more. Go to http://www.rarlab.com/.
NOTE: According to Steve Wendt, the "DOS" version also has OS/2 support.

Tesseract version 2.01 has been released as of 09/27/2007. It is an OS/2 port of the open-source OCR (optical character recognition) engine. Go to http://www.fbakan.de/.
