Updates from last month's column:

The WarpZilla team has released Mozilla 1.2 beta as of 10/19/2002. This is an update to WarpZilla 0.9.2 that Dave Watson demoed at the July 2001 SCOUG general meeting, was mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All, and was demoed by Steven Levine at the Sept. 2002 SCOUG general meeting. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2b/.

    There are 2 files (take your pick):
  • mozilla-os2-1.2b-installer.exe (now a self-extracting executable/installer).
  • mozilla-os2-1.2b.zip (you must unzip it yourself into a directory)

DFSee, which was demoed at the June 2001 SCOUG meeting, is now at version 5.04 as of 10/30/2002. It is a FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It now includes some JFS and LVM support. Go to http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm, or use search key dfsee on Hobbes. DaniS506 version 1.5.2 has been released as of 11/05/2002. This is the replacement for IBM's IBM1S506 EIDE driver, which features support for many chipsets, PCCard controllers, busmastering, Ultra33-DMA, Ultra ATA-66, Ultra ATA-100, faster PIO due to 32-bit I/O, and much more. Use search key danis on Hobbes.

WarpVision was updated on 10/21/2002. It is a player for DivX3/DivX4 format video streams, with MP3/AC3 audio. The latest version has a nice GUI interface, and no longer uses Odin and Win32 codecs. Go to http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.php.

    NOTES:
  1. There are downloadable "skins" available at http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.skins.php (correction from last month)
  2. There is also a command-line (11/05/2002) version of WarpVision available.
  3. According to a post announcing this update, you should delete VIDEO2.INI first.

BTTV version 0.03 (for BT8X8 TV cards) has been released as of 11/05/2002. It is a port of the Linux BTTV driver, with radio and TV working. Included is a small radio application, a small TV application, and the source is available (along with a LXAPI32 support driver for porting Linux drivers). IBM has updated as of 10/09/2002 the printer drivers for laserjets, inkjets, PostScript printers, and plotters to level 30.774. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/printerpak/en/.

Amouse version 2.2 beta has been updated as of 10/10/2002. USB support has now been added. This is a scroll mouse device driver that works better on some wheel mice than IBM's driver. There is also a widget for XCenter available. Go to http://www.nbsoftware.de/sw_ms21en.htm.

bootAble version 2.12 has been released as of 10/20/2002. It is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF (turned off by default), and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/.

z! has been updated as of 10/21/2002 to a version that has Shoutcast streaming and Ogg Vorbis support. This is a text-mode MP3 player that can handle streaming audio (Shoutcast), and now has Normalize support. Go to http://dink.org/z/, or use search key z-ogg on Hobbes.

JPhotoBrush version 2.2 has been released. It is an image-editing and enhancement application/tool written in Java 1.3, making extensive use of Swing and Java2D. HOWEVER: you need Java 1.3 or greater, which in turn means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation. Go to http://www.tanveer.freeservers.com/programming/JPhotoBrush.htm.

Virtual PC for OS/2 version 5.1 has been released. It allows you to execute additional operating systems on top of your OS/2 desktop. A number of fixes and enhancements are included. It is commercial software that must be purchased thru Mensys (http://shop.mensys.nl/catalogue/mns_VirtualPC.html), but you can order the digital delivery or a boxed version for 239 Euros (approximately $233.71). You can also order from Finnegan Software of Toronto for $241 at http://www.finnsoft.com. Go to http://www.innotek.de/products/virtualpc/.

XSane version 0.89 has been released as of 10/26/2002. It is a front- end for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) that requires XFree86/OS2. Go to http://home.tiscalinet.de/fbakan/xsane-os2.htm.

Ghostscript version 7.32 developer release is now available as of 11/04/2002. It is a freeware PostScript interpreter/converter for generating Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents. It is also the display engine for GSView (the graphical document viewer). Go to ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/test/.

JAlbum version 2.6.2 has been released as of 10/31/2002. This is a web photo album generator that runs on Java 1.3, which means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation. Go to http://www.datadosen.se/jalbum/.

An open-source version of 4OS2, version 3.04A, has been released as of 10/22/2002. This replaces the standard CMD.EXE that comes with OS/2 in an OS/2 command-prompt session. Go to ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/devel/beta/.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

A driver for Lucent PCI soft modems has been uploaded to Hobbes as of 10/08/2002. It now has V.90 support. Use search key ltm. NOTE: I tried it on my Thinkpad T20 and it didn't seem to work, so I reverted back to a version from March 2001 that I got from the Dr. Martinus Notebook/2 website; your mileage may vary.

Drivers for the VIA Technologies 8233/8235 integrated sound chip have been updated as of 10/08/2002. This is an AC97 sound driver for VIA Technologies KT266A, KT333, KT400 (8233/8233C/8233A/8235 south bridge) with IOCTL90 support. There is also an optional package that has ALC-201A patches, diagnostics utility, startup sound driver, and source code. Use search 823x on Hobbes.

IBM has updated as of 11/01/2002 their version of SciTech Display Doctor 7.1.1. HOWEVER: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/sddse711.exe.

Speaking of SciTech Display Doctor, there is now a patch for SciTech and SNAP Graphics so that if you use Win-OS/2 at resolutions greater than 1024x768, you can use smaller fonts if you prefer. Use search key smallfonts on Hobbes.

IBM has updated as of 09/09/2002 the USB printer support package. HOWEVER: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/usbprint.exe.

IBM has updated as of 09/06/2002 the USB storage driver to version 1.4. It greatly extends support for USB storage devices, including Compact Flash-type flash memory card readers. Some USB digital cameras also have been reported to work with this driver. HOWEVER: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/usbstor.exe.

IBM has updated as of 10/18/2002 the IBMATAPI.FLT and IBMIDECD.FLT drivers. Previously, IDE CD devices were handled by IBMIDECD.FLT, and all other ATAPI devices (like LS-120 and ZIP drives) were handled by IBMATAPI.FLT. Now all ATAPI devices are handled by a single driver (IBMATAPI.FLT). This also provides extended WarmSwap support for UltraBay devices on Thinkpads. IBM has updated the BIOS for the Thinkpad T20 as of 10/23/2002. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsdiy59.exe.

IBM has updated the BIOS for the Thinkpad T21 as of 10/22/2002. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsdkz32.exe.

IBM has updated the BIOS for the Thinkpad T22 as of 10/09/2002. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsd1630.exe.

JJSCDROM.DMD was updated as of 10/27/2002. It is an alternative to OS2CDROM.DMD, which fixes some problems and adds a few features. Use search key jjscd on Hobbes.

The infrared drivers and tools have been updated as of 10/30/2002. These allow for printing, communicating with a cell phone, and LAN access using IrDA. Use search key irdd on Hobbes.


This month's new listings - Applications:

Junk Spy version 2.02 has been released as of 10/16/2002. It is a free upgrade for version 2.0 users. A number of problems were fixed and includes specific performance enhancements for particular cases. It also includes support for the Habeas Sender Warrented E-mail service of Habeas, Inc. (http://www.habeas.com). You must close the currently-running Junk Spy prior to installing the new version. All settings will be preserved, and you should not need to make any changes within your e-mail program. Be sure to restart Junk Spy after the installation is complete. Go to http://www.junkspy.com/currentversion/currentversion.html. ALSO: I have written a short article about Junk Spy 2 at http://www.scoug.com/os24u/2002/scoug208.junkspy.html. It was written for Junk Spy 2.01, but the information is still applicable to version 2.02.

IBM has released FixPak XR_C003 for Convenience Packs 1 & 2 as of 10/21/2002. HOWEVER: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download.

The WarpZilla team has released Phoenix 0.4 as of 11/01/2002. It is a stripped-down version of Mozilla that does not include mail, news, IRC, composer, etc. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/phoenix/releases/0.4/. The file is phoenix-0.4-os2.zip (this is NOT a self-extracting file; you will need to manually unzip it into a new directory).

MultiZilla version 1.1.31 beta 2 has been released as of 10/23/2002. This is an extension that adds more features to the tabbed interface in Mozilla. Go to http://multizilla.mozdev.org/.

MozCalc version 0.4.5 has been released as of 10/13/2002. It is a desktop calculator for Mozilla-based applications, including WarpZilla. Go to http://mozcalc.mozdev.org/.

The Odin project has released a new build of Odin as of 10/30/2002.

Lynx version 2.8.5 dev9b has been released as of 10/15/2002. It is a text-mode browser that is explored in a several part article by Dallas Legan beginning in the Oct. 2002 OS/2 For You, and was also mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All. This version now has SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) support and NLS support, and is now packaged as a self-installing EXE file. Use search key lynx on Hobbes.

Our treasurer Steven Levine has uploaded Fix Kit 1 for Stardock's Process Commander to Hobbes as of 11/01/2002. Use search key pcfix.

UpdCD version 2.24 has been released as of 11/05/2002. It can be used to update the base Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business installation files with FixPaks, and supports the creation of updated installation diskettes. You can use the updated OS/2 image in combination with these diskettes to create new installations of OS/2 which already incorporate the FixPaks and other software.     NOTES:
  1. This is an update that must be applied to the base 2.2 version.
  2. eComStation & Convenience Pack 2 support is now included, as well as Java 1.3.1 and FixPak 3 for Convenience Packs support

Getaudiodir version 0.1 beta has been released as of 08/25/2002. This is a REXX utility that creates an index file of MPEG or Ogg Vorbis audio files, which includes information about the artist, etc. Go to http://www.maazl.de/project/mp3/getaudiodir.html.

Some helper scripts for encoding and decoding MP3 and Ogg Vorbis files have been released as version 0.1 beta as of 09/25/2002. This REXX script collection is intended to support the WPS integration of the LAME MP3 encoder and the Ogg Vorbis tools. Go to http://www.maazl.de/project/mp3/getaudiodir.html.

Open Watcom, which has been featured at several recent SCOUG meetings, is now at version 0.8.5 as of 10/03/2002. This is an open-source release of the Watcom compiler. Harry Chris Motin carefully took us through download and installation issues in March, and Michal Necasek, our June 2002 co- presenter, has an article describing how to set up Open Watcom at http://pages.prodigy.net/michaln/os2/Watcom11c.html. Download Open Watcom at ftp://ftp.openwatcom.org/watcom/openwatcom/.

Embellish, which was presented at the October 1997 SCOUG general meeting, is now available at Hobbes as of 10/08/2002. It is no longer supported. Use search key embos2.

Innotek has updated the Flash 5 plugin as of 09/26/2002. Some new features and fixes are included. It supports Netscape 4.61, Mozilla, and the IBM Web Browser. It is shareware and can by purchased from Mensys. Go to http://www.innotek.de/products/flash/.

GOGO version 3.10pl4 has been released as of 10/11/2002. This is a very fast MP3 encoder based on LAME. Use search key gogo on Hobbes.

Python, which was demonstrated by Sheridan George at the Dec. 2001 SCOUG general meeting, is now at version 2.2.2 as of 10/14/2002. You can read Sheridan's comparison of Python with REXX. Python is a programming language that comes from the UNIX world. Go to http://www.andymac.org/python.html, or use search key python on Hobbes.

There are 2 extensions to Python available at Hobbes as of 11/01/2002:

  • Scientific extensions version 2.4: use search key scientificpython
  • Numeric extensions version 22.0: use search key numericpython.

cdrtools 1.11a38 has been released as of 10/27/2002. This contains cdrecord, readcd, cdda2wav, and mkisofs. Use search key cdrtools on Hobbes.

SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) is now at version 1.0.9 as of 10/26/2002. Go to http://home.tiscalinet.de/fbakan/sane-os2.htm.

CDR/RW Wizard version 1.0.0 beta RC4 was released as of 10/26/2002. It is a GUI wizard interface to CDRecord/2 to burn CD-R/CD-RW (data, audio, etc.). It now features BootWizard, for creating bootable CD's, and CDRDAO/2. Go to http://www.quasarbbs.net/rocco/.

The RAR archiver has been updated as of 10/23/2002 to version 3.10 beta 2. This is a command-line compression utility, with tight general and multimedia compression, recovery record option management of non-RAR archives, RCVT aRchive ConVersion Tool, and more. Go to http://www.rarlab.com/.
