Updates from last month's column:

The WarpZilla team has released Mozilla 1.1 as of 08/28/2002. This is an update to WarpZilla 0.9.2 that Dave Watson demoed at the July 2001 SCOUG general meeting, and was mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All. SciTech has released SNAP Graphics for OS/2 2.0 as of 08/23/2002. This was mentioned at the June 2002 SCOUG general meeting. New features and bug fixes are included. New licenses must be purchased ($36.95 for a new license, $19.95 for an upgrade from SciTech Display Doctor Pro. If you have the IBM Software Choice version, you must buy a new license at $36.95). NOTE: Until you do purchase a license, it will operate in "trial" mode; it will remind you to purchase (especially near the end of the trial period).

DaniS506 version 1.4.7 has been released as of 08/17/2002. This is the replacement for IBM's IBM1S506 EIDE driver, which features support for many chipsets, PCCard controllers, busmastering, Ultra33-DMA, Ultra ATA-66, Ultra ATA-100, faster PIO due to 32-bit I/O, and much more. Use search key danis on Hobbes.

A port of the Linux BTTV driver (for BT8X8 TV cards) has been released as of 09/01/2002 (build 1143). A small radio application is included. Also available is the source (along with a LXAPI32 support driver for porting Linux drivers). Go to http://www.nord-com.net/s.milcke/bttv_en.htm. NOTE: This should be considered a beta driver.

The Network Interface Card Pak (NICPak) has been updated as of 08/24/2002. This is a collection of various NIC drivers and a tool for detecting and installing them. Go to http://pws.prserv.net/mckinnis/nicpak/.

DFSee, which was demoed at the June 2001 SCOUG meeting, is now at version 5.00 as of 08/08/2002. It is a FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It now includes some JFS and LVM support. Go to http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee.htm, or use search key dfsee on Hobbes. XWorkplace version 0.9.20 has been released as of 08/11/2002. This was part of Gary Granat's series on Seeking Ways to Get Rid of System Bloat. This version has some new features and bug fixes. It requires WarpIn to install (see below). Go to http://www.xworkplace.org/proj_xwp.html.

WarpIn version 0.9.20 has been released as of 08/11/2002. This is an open-source PM installer / uninstaller, that can also install quietly through environment variables. A number of bug fixes and new features are included. Go to http://www.xworkplace.org/proj_warpin.html.

Privoxy, formerly known as JunkBuster, is now at version 3.0.0 as of 08/26/2002. This program blocks ads and cookies while you are browsing the Web. It was reviewed in the August 2001 OS/2 For You. Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11118.

Odin Bug Report Generator version 0.5.7 was released as of 08/16/2002. It was part of Steven Levine's Odin presentation at the August 2001 SCOUG meeting. This is a tool to easily generate Odin bug reports, and replaces an older version that is now included with Odin. Use search key odinbug on Hobbes. NOTE: It is also available as a WPI file for installation with WarpIn, and source code is available.

The tools for VIA 8233 motherboards (KT266A and some KT133 chipsets) that control CPU cooling and power management have been updated as of 08/12/2002. Use search key 8233cool on Hobbes.

DSK4PM version 4.30 beta 5 has been released as of 08/09/2002. It is a PM utility to build disks from IBM's *.DSK images (replacing LOADDSKF.EXE). Go to http://dvalot.free.fr/emtcopy.htm.

UPS Monitor has been updated as of 08/07/2002. It monitors the status of your UPS, and provides shutdown services to the operating system. Go to http://home.att.net/~ASchw/upsmonitor.html to see if your UPS is supported, and if so, to download.

TVShow version 0.41 has been released as of 07/26/2002. This is intended for viewing TV with BT878-based TV cards. Go to http://os2.kiev.ua/en/tvshow.php.

WarpVision was updated on 08/16/2002. It is a player for DivX3/DivX4 format video streams, with MP3/AC3 audio. The latest version has a nice GUI interface, and no longer uses Odin and Win32 codecs. Go to http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.php. NOTE: There are downloadable "skins" available at http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.skins.pnp.

Maul Publisher version 2.20 was released as of 09/01/2002. It is billed as "the world's first professional desktop publisher for OS/2". Go to http://www.manglais.com/ for further details and download.

UpdCD version 2.22 has been released as of 09/01/2002. Some bug fixes and enhancements are included. It can be used to update the base Warp 4 (or Warp Server for e-Business) installation files with FixPaks, and supports the creation of updated installation diskettes. You can use the updated OS/2 image in combination with these diskettes to create new installations of OS/2 which already incorporate the FixPaks and other software.     NOTES:
  1. Version 2.22 is an update of version 2.2, not a full version (i.e. must be applied on top of version 2.2).
  2. The Warp Update Kit (a CD-ROM which will enable you to create your own updated Warp CD) has been updated to support Warp 3 as well as Warp 4. Go to http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/doc/wupdkit.htm.

ImageJ version 1.28 has been released as of 08/26/2002. It is a powerful image-editing program with numerous plugins. HOWEVER: You need Java 1.3 or greater, which in turn means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation. Go to http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/.

WaveCut beta 9 has been released. This is a wave player and cutter with RSJ support, integration with Normalize, and fast cutting with Copywave. The documentation is currently only in German, but the program should be self-explanatory. Go to http://subsys.de/index2.htm. NOTE: You will also find some other utilities at this site, including a couple that work with Mesa2 version 2.2.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

SciTech has released as of 08/07/2002 SciTech Display Doctor 7.1. This is the last version of the Display Doctor series, which will be superceded by SNAP Graphics. Go to http://www.scitechsoft.com/products/enterprise/sdd_os2_content.html.

IBM has released as of 08/19/2002 Device Driver FixPak 3. HOWEVER: Starting with this FixPak, you need a current Software Choice subscription to download.

IBM has released as of 08/01/2002 a driver to support partitions that extend beyond 1024 cylinders (generally drives > 7.9GB). OS/2 isn't limited in the disk size it can access, but new partition types have been created to identify partitions beyond 1024 cylinders. Some utilities and other operating systems create or change partitions to use these new partition types, and that can affect the operation of OS/2. This package will allow OS/2 to work in an environment that is utilizing these new partition types (namely 0x0E and 0x0F). The file to download depends on the output of the "VER /R" command at an OS/2 command prompt.

IBM has updated as of 08/08/2002 the PCCard Standard 5.0 (Cardbus) support for Thinkpads. HOWEVER: You must be a current Software Choice subscriber to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/cardbus.exe.

IBM has updated as of 08/14/2002 their version of SciTech Display Doctor. This is a subset of the full version of SciTech Display Doctor 7.1 (see above). HOWEVER: You must be a current Software Choice subscriber to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/sddse710.exe.

IBM has updated as of 08/16/2002 the USB basic device support drivers to support USB devices that meet the 1.0 OHCI, 1.1 UHCI, or 2.0 EHCI specifications. HOWEVER: You must be a current Software Choice subscriber to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/usb/usbehci.exe. ALSO: You must also download and install a "loader" package prior to installation of the USB drivers. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/usb/os2ldr??.exe, where ?? is EN (English), FR (French), DE (German), IT (Italian), JP (Japanese), BR (Portuguese), ES (Spanish), CX (Simplfied Chinese), or TW (Taiwanese).

IBM has updated as of 07/12/2002 the USB Mass Storage Device Driver, which provides OS/2 support for USB mass storage devices that meet the USB 1.0 or 1.1 specification and the USB Mass Storage 1.0 specification. Examples of supported devices include diskette drives, ZIP drives, CD-ROM drives, and LS-120 drives. HOWEVER: You must have a current Software Choice subscription to download. IBM has updated as of 08/31/2002 the Ethernet driver for the Thinkpad T23 and T30 that supports the Intel PRO/100 VE/SP Ethernet adapter. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/tpnwall.exe. NOTE: This is a very large file (over 19MB), and is a self-extracting executable. OS/2 driver installations is through MPTS.

IBM has updated the BIOS for the Thinkpad T30 as of 08/29/2002. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsd1i57.exe.

A patch for IBM's USBMSD.ADD, with support for Olympus digital cameras, was released as of 08/09/2002 (version 1.3a). Use search key usbmsd on Hobbes.

DaniATAPI version 0.3.11 was released as of 08/17/2002. It is a replacement for IBM's ATAPI drivers (IBMIDECD, IBMATAPI, PCM2ATA.ADD, and OS2PCARD.DMD). It includes support for ZIP-250 drives, including full media swapping, and even booting from ZIP drives. It has better 32-bit PIO when combined with DANIS506.ADD (see above), and devices can be used as SCSI, for use with programs like CDRecord or RSJ. Use search key dania on Hobbes.

The C-Media 8738 audio driver is now at version 0.1.9 beta as of 08/16/2002. Use search key cmedia on Hobbes.

Drivers for the VIA Technologies 8233/8235 integrated sound chip have been released as of 08/19/2002. This is an AC97 sound driver for VIA Technologies KT266A, KT333, KT400 (8233/8233C/8233A/8235 south bridge) with IOCTL90 support. There is also an optional package that has ALC-201A patches, diagnostics utility, startup sound driver, and source code. Use search key 823x on Hobbes.

JJSCDROM.DMD was updated as of 08/24/2002. It is an alternative to OS2CDROM.DMD, which fixes some problems and adds some features. Use search key jjscd on Hobbes.

VDMA version 0.9b beta has been released. This is a replacement for IBM's VDMA driver, which allows some games (Prince of Persia 2, Goblins 3, and Sam'n Max) to work properly. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/vdd-vdma.php.


This month's new listings - Applications:

CDR/RW Wizard is now at version 1.0.0 beta RC3 as of 08/01/2002. It is a GUI wizard interface to CDRecord/2 to burn CD-R/CD-RW's (data, audio, etc). It now features BootWizard, for creating bootable CD's, and CDRDAO/2. Go to http://www.quasarbbs.net/rocco/.

SNES9x, the Super Nintendo emulator that Jerry Rash demoed at the March 2001 SCOUG general meeting, is now at version 1.39 release 13 as of 08/02/2002. There are versions for Pentiums and AMD's.

AiR-BOOT is now at version 0.92b (Release Candidate 2) as of 08/02/2002. It is a multi-boot partition loader with some extra features, including colored "Award-like" SETUP, virus protection, Linux kernel support, and more. Some fixes are included from the previous version (0.91B RC 1). Go to http://ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/air-boot.php.

Apache version 2.0.40 has been released as of 08/09/2002. It is the premier web server of the Internet, and offers big performance improvements over the older versions due to multi-threading and elimination of some EMX dependencies. A significant vulnerability was fixed in this release, along with some other bugs. MAD version 0.14.2b has been released as of 08/03/2002. It is a high- quality MPEG audio decoder. It currently supports MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 extension to Lower Sampling Frequencies, as well as the so-called MPEG 2.5 format. All 3 audio layers (Layer I, Layer II, and Layer III a.k.a. MP3) are fully implemented. Use search key mad on Hobbes.

XSane version 0.87 has been released as of 07/31/2002. It is a front- end for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) that requires XFree86/OS2. Go to http://home.tiscalinet.de/fbakan/xsane-os2.htm.

IBM's Mozilla porting team has released as of 07/29/2002 fixes for VisualAge C++ 3.65. Go to ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/warpzilla/vacpp365fix.zip.

ZOC version 4.06 has been released as of 07/26/2002. It is an award- winning telnet, secure shell (SSH), rlogin, modem and ISDN communications program. Go to http://www.emtec.com/zoc/.

WarpZip version 3.7 has been released as of 09/02/2002. Go to http://www.pillarsoft.net/warpzip.html. NOTE: It is shareware and can be registered at this location or at BMT Micro.

Plogg has been released as of 08/17/2002. It is an open-source ncurses (text-based) Ogg Vorbis/MP3 player. It features basic playlist functions and navigation between songs. Use search key plogg on Hobbes. NOTE: There are versions for installation with WarpIn available also.

Autoconf version 2.53b and Automake version 1.6.2 were released as of 08/16/2002. These tools are important pieces needed for porting other UNIX programs to OS/2. Use search keys autoconf and automake on Hobbes, respectively.

GNU Make version 3.79.2a1 was released as of 08/16/2002. This is an essential tool for writing and/or porting open-source programs. Use search key make-3 on Hobbes.

NewView version 1.41.24 was released as of 08/24/2002. This is a replacement for VIEW.EXE that comes with OS/2 to view .INF document files. Use search key newview on Hobbes, or go to http://homepages.visp.co.nz/~aaronlawrence/NewView.html.

An alpha version of XFree86/OS2 (4.x) has been released as of 08/12/2002. Go to ftp://borneo.gmd.de/pub/misc/XFree86OS2/alpha/binaries/. The stable version is 3.3.6 (as of 01/09/2002) at http://borneo.gmd.de/~veit/os2/xf86os2.html.

Firewall documentation for the MPTS firewall and VPN feature has been updated as of 08/31/2002. This INF document describes how to configure and use the powerful built-in firewall feature with support for IP packet filtering and IPSec VPN tunnels that have been included in TCP/IP version 4.1 and above. Normalize version 0.7.5 has been released as of 08/30/2002. This is an overly complicated tool for adjusting the volume of wave files to a standard volume level. This is useful for things like creating MP3 mixes, where different recording levels on different albums can cause the volume to vary greatly from song to song. Use search key normal on Hobbes.

MMIOProc codecs for MP3 and OGG Vorbis have been updated as of 08/28/2002 to version 0.4.1 and 0.3, respectively. With these codecs the OS/2 multimedia system is able to play (and convert to WAV) MP3 and OGG Vorbis files without any additional software. Go to http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~roconnor/MMIOMP3/.
