Updates from last month's column:

The WarpZilla team has released as of 10/17/2001 WarpZilla version 0.9.5. This is an update to WarpZilla 0.9.2 that Dave Watson demoed at the July 2001 SCOUG general meeting, and now has DDE support. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.5/. The file is mozilla-os2-vacpp-0.9.5.zip.

DFSee, which was demoed at the June 2001 SCOUG meeting, has been updated to version 4.07 as of 10/18/2001. It is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It now includes some JFS and LVM support. Go to http://www.fsys.demon.nl/dfsee.htm. NOTE: DFSee is now shareware.

GSView version 4.05 beta has been released as of 10/20/2001. It is a PM front-end for GhostScript, as demoed by Tony Butka at the July 2001 General Interest Group. Some minor enhancements and fixes are incorporated. Go to http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/.

SIO version 2.01 is now available as of 10/16/2001. This is a replacement for the COM.SYS/VCOM.SYS drivers that come with OS/2. Go to http://www.gwinn.com/.

Odin Bug Report Generator version 0.5.3a, which was mentioned by Steven Levine during his Odin presentation at the Aug. 2001 SCOUG general meeting, has been released as of 10/09/2001. As the name implies, this is a tool to easily generate Odin bug reports, and supercedes an older version that is included with Odin. Use search key odinbug on Hobbes.

IBM's Mozilla porting team has released as of 10/11/2001 some optimization fixes for Visual Age for C version 3.6. Go to ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/warpzilla/vacppoptfix.zip.

DaniDASD version 1.4.4 has been released as of 10/31/2001. It is a replacement for OS2DASD.DMD. Use search key danidasd on Hobbes. More info is at http://www.os2bbs.com:80/os2news/. NOTE: By the time you read this, you may need to click on the "More Files" link to read the information.

Daniela Engert has refreshed as of 10/09/2001 a patch to OS2LDR that fixes the OS/2 >64MB memory detection defect found with recent BIOSes. Use search key patchldr on Hobbes.

cdrecord version 1.11a07 has been released as of 10/06/2001. It is a tool to burn single-session, multi-session, or audio CD's. It is freeware; use search key cdrtools on Hobbes.

ISOFS version 0.2.1 has been released as of 10/02/2001. It is an installable file system (IFS) to access ISO rawfiles suitable for burning on CD. It allows transparent access to the contents of the raw file. Currently only Joliet filenames are supported, but this may change in the future. IBM has updated as of 10/02/2001 the BIOS for the Thinkpad T22 series. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsd1627.exe.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

IBM has updated as of 10/12/2001 the UDF.IFS to version 1.5. This allows for reading and writing CD-RW's and DVD's. HOWEVER: You must be a current subscriber to Software Choice to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/udf.exe.

IBM has updated as of 10/09/2001 the PostScript, ink-jet, laserjet, and plotter printer drivers to version 30.746. Go to ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/printpak/en/.

Matrox has released as of 10/03/2001 version 2.51 of their video card BIOS updates for the G200, G400, G450, and G550 series. Go to http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/bios/home2.cfm.

The C-Media audio driver has been released as of 10/21/2001; it is now at version 0.14. Look for cmedia014.zip on Hobbes.

IBM has updated as of 10/17/2001 the BIOS for the Thinkpad T20 series. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsdiy57.exe.

IBM has updated as of 10/17/2001 the BIOS for the Thinkpad T21 series. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsdkz30.exe.

IBM has updated as of 10/19/2001 the BIOS for the Thinkpad T23 series. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/mobiles/spsdk1a43.exe.

Daniela Engert has updated DANIS506.ADD to version 1.3.10 as of 10/31/2001. This is a replacement for IBM1S506.ADD that comes with OS/2. Look for DANIS506R1310.ZIP on Hobbes.

Daniela Engert has updated DANIATAPI.FLT to version 0.3.5 as of 10/31/2001. This is a replacement for IBMATAPI.FLT that comes with OS/2. Look for DANIATAPI035.ZIP on Hobbes.


This month's new listings - Applications:

IBM has refreshed as of 09/28/2001 Java 1.3. However: You must be a current subscriber to Software Choice to download. Go to http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/asd-bin/doc/en_us/java13/f-feat.htm.

IBM has released as of 10/26/2001 updates to the OS2KRNL files, trap dump facility, SES (security), and JFS. Go to ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/update-kernels/. The files are:

  • W41026.ZIP (Warp 4 and Convenience Pak)
  • UNI1026.ZIP (Warp Server for e-Business non-SMP)
  • SMP1026.ZIP (Warp Server for e-Business with SMP)
  • SES0330.ZIP (SES security update)
  • DF1026.ZIP (trap dump formatter)
  • JFS1026.ZIP (JFS Journaled File System update)

UpdCD version 1.73 has been released as of 10/24/2001. This is a tool to update the base Warp 4 or Warp Server for e-Business installation files with FixPaks, and supports the creation of updated installation diskettes. You can use the updated OS/2 image in combination with the updated install diskettes to create new installations of OS/2 which already incorporate the FixPaks and other software. Go to http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm. (NOTE: the version 1.73 is a fix release that should be installed on top of version 1.7).

Lynx version 2.85dev3b has been released as of 10/20/2001. This is a text-mode WWW browser that was reviewed recently by Dallas Legan. Use search key lynx on Hobbes.

z! has been updated as of 09/30/2001. This is a text-mode MP3 player that can handle streaming audio (Shoutcast). Go to http://dink.org/z/.

There are some patches to allow some DOS games to run under OS/2 that were released as of 10/20/2001. The Lucas Arts Games Generic patch allows Monkey Island 1 and Indiana Jones 3 to run; use search key lucasfix on Hobbes. The Lemmings 2 patch allows that game to run; use search key lemm2fix on Hobbes.

NDPISO version 1.3 has been released as of 10/19/2001. It is apparently an ISO filesystem plug-in for NetDrive. Use search key ndpiso on Hobbes.

A software kit for integrating PMMail with Netscape has been released as of 10/17/2001 to version 0.0.4. This causes PMMail to be invoked instead of Netscape Messenger when a "mailto:" link is pressed, or other instances when mail is used. Go to http://www.geocities.com/glassman_ru/software/english/pmmail.html.

Some codecs for the Warpvision AVI player have been uploaded to Hobbes as of 10/16/2001. These enable the playing of the vast majority of AVI's, including Indeo, Cinepac, and MP4. Use search key wviscdc.

Various versions of UPS Monitor were released as of 10/14/2001. Go to http://home.att.net/~ASchw/upsmonitor.html to see if your UPS is supported, and if so, to download.

eComStation CD covers for each of the 3 CD's, in StarOffice format, are now available as of 10/13/2001. Go to http://www.os2.cz/index.php3?lang=en&v=download. They also have other CD covers for Warp Server for e-Business, some boot logos, PM123 skins, and icons available, among other downloadable material.

Guiffy version 3.2 has been released as of 10/12/2001. It is a file compare/merge (diff-like) tool with a GUI implemented in Java. Go to http://www.guiffy.com/. NOTE: The author is based in Southern California (Escondido).

ThirdEye/REXX has been released as of 10/12/2001. This provides a REXX interface to digital cameras. Go to http://ecomstation.ru/thirdeye/.

TiMidity version 2.10.4 has been released as of 10/11/2001. It plays MIDI and Module (.MOD) files via software, rather than relying on your sound card's capabilities. There is also a MCD version that installs as part of OS/2 Multimedia. Go to http://www.reamined.on.ca/doconnor/timidity.html.

Apache version 1.3.22 has been released as of 10/11/2001. It is the premier web server of the Internet. Go to http://apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/os2/.

JunkBuster version 2.99 alpha has been released as of 10/07/2001. This blocks ads and cookies while you are browsing the Web. Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=11118. (Note: This was reviewed in the August 2001 OS/2 For You).

XSane version 0.80 has been released as of 10/07/2001. This is a front-end for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) that requires XFree86/OS2. Go to http://home.tiscalinet.de/fbakan/xsane-os2.htm.

SNES9x version 1.39 has been released as of 10/21/2001. This is a fast and accurate Super Nintendo emulator. Go to http://emuos2.netlabs.org/snes9x/; there is a Pentium version and an AMD version.

Ghostscript version 7.03 was released as of 10/21/2001. It is an interpreter for the PostScript language and PDF documents. A number of bug fixes and performance enhancements are included. Go to ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/AFPL/gs703/gs703os2.zip.
