Updates from last month's column:

SNES9X, the Super Nintendo emulator that Jerry Rash demoed at the March 2001 SCOUG meeting, has been updated to release 8 as of 04/26/2001. It supports windowed graphics using DIVE, full-screen graphics using MGL, stereo sound using DART, joystick support, NVRAM saving for saved games, and fast and accurate emulation. There is an Enhanced E editor (basically E.EXE with the ability to print, among a few other enhancements). It is now at version 2.2a as of 04/16/2001. Go to http://www.pillarsoft.net/enhanced.html.

NetBeans version 3.2 Release Candidate 4 is available for download as of 04/26/2001. It is a Java IDE written in pure Java. The IDE is based on JFC, and uses its full feature set. Full information and download is at http://www.netbeans.org.

CoolFM version 1.3 has been released. This is a powerful FM radio tuner control program, compatible with most popular FM tuners. Go to http://os2.ru/projects/coolfm/.

Psion OS/2 Utilities version 1.0 has been released as of 04/12/2001. They are text mode ftp-like utilities for the Psion handhelds. Go to ftp://cbs-edu.chel.su/pub/Porro/Psion/.

An OS/2 port of cdrdao 1.1.5pre4 alpha 1 has been released as of 04/11/2001. It is a free CD-R/RW writing program for Disk At Once mode. Use search key cdrdao on Hobbes.

cdrecord version 1.10a19 is now available as of 04/18/2001. This has the capability of burning single-session, multi-session, or audio CD's. Use search key cdrecord on Hobbes. An older version (1.10a15 as of 02/27/2001) is at http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/cdrecord/cdrecordmain.htm.

Inkjet Utils version 0.30-bis-a has been released as of 04/18/2001. It can be used to clean and align the printer heads on Epson and some HP inkjet printers. Go to ftp://ftp.pilot-film.com/os2/inkjet_utils/.

eStyler Lite is now at version 1.0.26 as of 04/04/2001. It is a "lite" version of Styler/2 (reviewed by Gary Granat in the July 2000 OS/2 For You). It features enhanced titlebars & push-buttons, Windows 9x key support, and enhanced shutdown. There is a catch: it only works on eComStation. Go to ftp://ftp.ecomstation.com/.

For those of you who use ZOC: version 4.0 has been released as of 04/03/2001. It is an award-winning Telnet, secure shell (SSH), rlogin, modem, and ISDN communications program. Go to http://www.emtec.com/download.html#zocfiles. Also, if you decide to stick with the 3.x version of ZOC, that is now at version 3.17 as of 04/22/2001. The same URL can be used to download the 3.17 version as well as the 4.0 version. There are German versions and Windows versions as well as the English OS/2 versions.

OS2UNIX version 1.5 has been released as of 04/03/2001. This tool allows you to easily compile software for OS/2 from Linux source code without needing autoconf. Go to http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~vtgf3mpr/os2unix/os2unix.htm.

PMMail has been updated as of 04/13/2001 to beta version 2.20.2300. It contains some bug fixes, and now allows SMTP authentication. Go to http://www.pmmail2000.com/betas/. The file is PMM220.EXE (as there are Windows versions of PMMail as well).

UPS Monitor has been updated as of 04/28/2001. It will monitor the status of an APC UPS, and provide shutdown services to the operating system. Go to http://home.att.net/~ASchw/upsmonitor.html; it lists the supported UPSs.

KidStreet version 1.1 has been released as of 04/18/2001. As the name implies, it is an educational program for children. It currently has spelling and math; more is planned once the author (Wayne Swanson, swanee@pillarsoft.net) gets more feedback. Go to http://www.pillarsoft.net/kidstreet.html.

MIDI Station Sequencer version 3.0 beta 2 is now available. It is a 16-channel, multi-track sequencer that uses the Real-Time MIDI subsystem to communicate with a MIDI keyboard. New features include a brand-new audio engine, full audio editing, and complete audio sequencing. Go to http://www.geocities.com/Hodges_C/.

z! version april17alpha has been released as of 04/17/2001. It is a text-mode MP3 player that can handle streaming audio (Shoutcast). Go to http://dink.org/z/.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

The IBM version of SciTech Display Doctor has been updated as of 04/05/2001 to version 7.0.5. However: this version is only available to those with a current Software Choice subscription. The previous version 7.0.4 is still available as well. Find both versions at http://service.software.ibm.com/os2ddpak/.

IBM has released two more USB drivers as of 04/30/2001. They are for USB Ethernet network interface and USB CD-ROM and CD-RW. They are only available to those with a current Software Choice subscription. Go to http://service5.boulder.ibm.com/2bcprod.nsf.

IBM has updated as of 04/11/2001 the printer drivers for PostScript, ink-jets, laserjets, and plotters to version 30.734. Go to ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/printpak/en/.

Matrox has released version 2.07 of their video card BIOS updates for the G200, G400, and G450 series as of 04/10/2001. Go to http://www.matrox.com/mga/support/drivers/bios/home2.cfm.

USBRes version 0.9.6 has been released as of 04/01/2001. This consists of a driver and an application that shows the USB devices connected to the PC, to help determine what is connected, and if it works with the IBM USB drivers. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/usb/.

Compart has released as of 04/19/2001 some updated scanner drivers for Impos/2. It supports scanners from Agfa, Epson, Escom, HP, Fujitsu, Microtek, Mustek, Canon, Ricoh, IBM, Bell&Howell, and C.T.S. HOWEVER: You need an account to download. Go to http://www.compart.net/.

A SoundBlaster Live! driver (version 0.70) has been released. It features: up to 32 simultaneous wave playback streams, recording stream, full duplex, support for the IOCTL90 mixer interface, and full source code is available from the Netlabs CVS server. This month's new listings - Applications:

Junk Spy version 2.0 has been released as of 04/23/2001. Junk Spy is an anti-spam program for your email from Sundial Systems. It includes new features of an Exception Wizard, ORBS support, improved security, and support for that "other platform." Go to http://www.junkspy.com.

An EMX build of Mozilla 0.9PRE has been released as of 04/30/2001. It contains the new features recently checked into Mozilla, including the new caching algorithm, libprOn, and more. Go to http://anduin.net/mozilla/. NOTE: the build is compressed into the .RAR format.

Speaking of the .RAR format, WarpZip version 3.4, released on 04/25/2001, will search for, list, view, extract, and do "near seamless" installations from ZIP, ARJ, RAR, LZH, TGZ, GZ, WPI, and OS/2 "packed" file formats. It also features a Download PreProcessor that will selectively move your downloaded zip files to any directory you choose, test them for integrity, virus-test them, and queue them up for later review. IBM has refreshed Java 1.3 as of 04/03/2001 for those with a current Software Choice subscription. It now includes a plug-in for the IBM Web Browser (and WarpZilla) so that it can use Java 1.3. Go to http://service.boulder.ibm.com/asd-bin/doc/en_us/java13/f-feat.htm.

GSView version 3.62 has been released as of 04/12/2001, along with Ghostscript version 7 as of 04/09/2001. Ghostscript is a freeware PostScript interpreter/converter for generating Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) documents, and GSView is a graphical document viewer that uses Ghostscript as its' display engine. There is also a version of GhostScript 7.0 with enhanced HP DeskJet support, as of 04/26/2001. It supports HP 670, 690, 850, 855, 870, 890, 1100, and 1600. Go to http://people.freenet.de/von.hagen/hp-e.htm.

FreeJFS is a freeware version of IBM's Journaled File System (JFS); it was released on 04/09/2001. It is based on the open-source OpenJFS for Linux. Go to http://os2.ru/projects/freejfs/.

XWorkplace, which was part of Gary Granat's series on Seeking Ways to Get Rid of System Bloat, is now at version 0.9.11 as of 04/26/2001. A refreshed version is expected soon to fix a few minor bugs. Go to http://www.xworkplace.org/proj_xwp.html. It requires WarpIn (see below)

WarpIN, which was also part of Gary Granat's series on Seeking Ways to Get Rid of System Bloat (see http://www.scoug.com/os24u/2000/scoug008.xworkplace.html), is now at version 0.9.11 as of 04/26/2001. Go to http://www.xworkplace.org/proj_warpin.html.

Virtual Gameboy Emulator is at "sneak peek 2" status as of 04/08/2001. Go to http://home.houston.rr.com/spiceware/vgb.html.

CandyFolder beta 3 has been released as of 04/08/2001. This gives the illusion of transparent desktop folders (similar if not identical to what is now available as part of Mac OS X). Go to http://www.os2world.com/cdwriting/candyfolderb3.zip.

CDR/RW Wizard version 0.9.98 has been released as of 04/07/2001. It is a GUI wizard interface to CDRecord/2 to burn CD-R/CD-RW (data, audio, etc.) It now features BootWizard for creating bootable CD's. Go to http://www.quasarbbs.net/rocco/.

Scan Lite version 0.40 has been released. It is a free SANE scanning front-end that requires Java. Go to http://www.objects.com.au/products/josi/scanlite/.

Moneydance version 3.0 has been released as of 03/24/2001. It is a personal finance manager written completely in Java. It includes transaction auto-completion, graphing, reporting, a reconciliation tool, running cleared vs. uncleared balances, transaction sorting, double-entry, multiple currencies, multiple accounts, and much more. A test version of WarpVision has been released as of 04/30/2001. It is a player for DivX format video streams, using the Win32 codec via Odin. However: it currently doesn't have sound support. Go to http://os2.ru/projects/video/warpvision.phtml.en.

StHWMon version 0.16B has been released as of 04/27/2001. It is a temperature/fan/voltage monitor for motherboards with the VIA_82C686 chip. It can shut down OS/2 and do an APM power-off if a failure occurs. Go to http://home.t-online.de/home/stefan.milcke/hwmon_en.htm.

PM123 version 1.1 beta 4 has been released as of 04/15/2001. It is a MP3, WAV, and CD audio player. Some of the features include sharing of the sound card, playlist with drag/drop support, HTTP streaming, and the use of "skins" (including some WinAmp skins) to change the program's look. DTape beta 6 has been released. It is an OS/2 PM program which provides the facilities to record and replay digital audio directly to/from disk (i.e., a digital tape recorder). Features include peak level monitoring and unlimited .WAV file sizes (up to 4GB). Go to http://home.clara.net/orac/os2.htm#dtape.

Tonigy version 1.2 has been released as of 04/30/2001. It allows you to access tracks of audio and video CD's as ordinary files. Audio tracks are represented as WAV and RAW files which can be played, copied, or encoded from CD directly. Video tracks are represented as MPG files, which can be used for viewing video by MPEG players not supporting Video CD. These MPG files can then be copied to a hard drive.
