SOMEWHERE IN CYBERSPACE --- As this is my 2nd month of writing this column, I will list updates (if any) from the previous month's column first:

SciTech Display Doctor is now at beta 22 (03/14/2000). To download, go to ftp://ftp.scitechsoft.com/sdd/beta/os2. Their web page is at http://www.scitechsoft.com/sdd_os2.html. NOTE: a subset of SciTech Display Doctor has been released by IBM on the Device Driver Pak On-Line at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/os2ddpak/sddse700.zip.

Kevin McCoy has updated KeyRing/2 again on 03/15/2000 to version 1.13. Go to http://www.idk-inc.com/kr2index.htm.

CDR/RW Wizard is at version 0.99 beta 8.1; it's a GUI interface to CDRecord/2. This updated beta was released on 03/13/2000. It is at http://www.quasarbbs.com/rocco/.

MIDI Station Sequencer ver. 2.01 is now available as of 03/24/2000. Go to http://www.dinosoft.it/~midistation/index.html or http://www.geocities.com/Hodges_C.

For those of you who use eBay, there's eBayWatch/2, version 0.09c. Go to http://www.eclipse.net/~knkrchnr/. It's meant to aid you in searching for, monitoring, and bidding on auction items.

InCharge has been updated on 03/04/2000 to version 1.02.62. Go to http://www.spitfiresoftware.com/.

This month's new listings:

There is a new update to Java 1.1.8; if you don't want to wait to get an updated SCOUG CD of the month at the April general meeting, you can download it at ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/software/java/fixes/os2/11/118. Remember you must have Java 1.1.8 already installed.

Ghostscript version 6.01 and GSView versions 2.9 and 2.91 (beta) were released between 03/20/2000 and 03/22/2000. Ghostscript is a freeware Postscript interpreter/converter for generating Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents, and GSView is a graphical document viewer that uses Ghostscript as its display engine. According to Klaus Staedtler, it contains the old pstotext which doesn't work together with Ghostscript 6.x, so you need these files from GSView 2.8. You can find these at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/get601.html (Ghostscript), http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview (GSView 2.9), and ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/pub/ghost/ghostgum/beta (GSView 2.91 beta).

Another MP3 encoder, LAME version 3.63, has been ported (03/13/2000) to OS/2. It includes a graphical frame analyzer. There is also a front-end called Puristin, currently at version 0.26 as of 03/21/2000. You can find LAME at Hobbes using search key LAME. To find Puristin on Hobbes, use search key MP3P.

For you game players, Crown of Might version 1.03 has been released as of 03/15/2000. This is a strategy game like the classic "Defender of the Crown". You can find it at http://www.ndh.net/home/ausdemmoore/crown.html. The site also promises a Mahjongg game called Shisen in the near future. Information on that is at http://www.ndh.net/home/j.ausdemmoore/shisene.html.

Another game called bOmb!, a Java clone of Bomberman, is available. Steve Wendt has created an install script and icon for it, and has it at http://www.os2bbs.com:80/os2news/bOmb.zip. The text for the game is in French, but Steve says if he could figure out how to play it, you can too.

For those of you who do IRC: PMBitchX version 1.0c16 release 2 is on Hobbes using search key PMBX.

Henk Kelder, who has written FAT32 drivers for OS/2, has updated them on 03/15/2000 to version 0.92 to include support for Warp Server for e-Business. He also has Association Editor version 2.1, Icontool version 1.92, and WPTools version 3.2 (INI file maintenance, desktop backup/restore, etc). All are at http://www.os2ss.com/information/kelder/.

Electronic Teller, one of OS/2's oldest shareware home financial applications, is now at version 3.22 as of 03/15/2000. It has the capability of importing .QIF files from Quicken. It is at http://members.home.net/phcaron/et/etframe.htm.

Maul Publisher version 1.20 has been released on 03/03/2000. It is billed as the "world's first professional desktop publisher for OS/2". Go to http://www.manglais.com/.

If you or someone you know is diabetic, Wayne Swanson has created a program called BgMetrics to track blood glucose readings and dietary information. He plans to include support for downloading data from selected glucometers and developing the database for other trackable items. It's a freeware download at http://www.pillarsoft.net/.

Timidity++ version 2.90 (03/09/2000), LBPlay version 0.07 (02/28/2000), LBMIDI version 0.02 (02/28/2000), LBCSMix version 1.00 (03/31/1999), and LBMIDIEd version 0.03 (12/26/1998) are available at http://www.podolsk.ru/~boga/os2programs.html.

Did you stick around at the March 2000 SCOUG meeting for Tim Katz's XFree86/OS2 presentation? One of the programs that runs under XFree86/OS2 is GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), billed as THE PhotoShop for Linux. A test version of 1.1.18 (03/07/2000) is available at http://birdy.hpage.net/; the stable version 1.0.2 is at http://www.netlabs.org/gimp/.

Daniela Engert has updated on 03/06/2000 Danis506 version 1.2.0 and Daniatapi version 0.20. Danis506 is at Hobbes with search key dania, and Daniatapi has search key dania. She is also planning on creating Danidasd, an OS2DASD.DMD replacement with FAT32 support (however you will need Henk Kelder's FAT32 drivers listed above). I'll keep you posted.

And...in case you know German and use Mesa 2, there's a program called GerMenue (version 1.2) at http://www.subsys.de. It's a German menu for Mesa 2, with tiptexts and special toolbar buttons. It's freeware.
