I have several instances of eCS installed on various drives. I can boot
from any one and see the others drives. Maybe you are suggesting I have
a hidden drive that is identical to the one I am running? I can copy all
sorts of files to a "broken" OS's drive, but it will not boot, or it
boots without a desktop.

I always have done that.
