What sort of packets are you being hit with?  There's a lot of port 1900  
stuff floating around along with all the usual IRC trojan.  
 
host is basically a simple nslookup.  The response that the DNS knows how  
to reach the host, but there's no domain name info avialable.  The manual  
is pretty clear on what host does.  If you are interested the the gory  
details, there's always iptrace.
