Well that does worry me. 
AFAIK, I am using the same files for the maintenance partition as for the 
regular setup. But when I boot into the maintenance partition, I get the 
following: 
Unicode: File not found 
Unicode: Unable to load Codepage 850 
Unicode: Error=14 
It then continues booting and seems to work OK. 
What could be different here?
