The "Software Choice" (SWC) Lucent WinModem driver is for T20 Thinkpad   
dated 27-FEB-2003.  HOBBES <http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/>  has a T20 Lucent   
Driver as well dated 13-AUG-2001..

You might give this driver a try before getting rid of your modem...
