Can you ping yourself?  From a command line type 
  ping 127.0.0.1 
and see what happens.  If ping 127.0.0.1 works then your loopback 
interface is enabled. 
Are you DHCP?

Thanks for your reply. I'll try to ping myself when I get back to my eCS machine, at home. 
No, I don't use DHCP. I mainly use TCP/IP for Internet access (modem). I have a 3COM NIC installed, but I have never got around to setting up a LAN.
