Hmm.  PING will tell you if a computer is connected, so you could PING  
every IP address on your node and see which ones respond.  
 
Technically, PING requests and responses are handled (afaik) by a  
machine's TCP/IP stack.  Some firewalls drop the PING packets on  
purpose, so if you don't get a response there might still be a machine  
there.  And your cable ISP may have their DHCP configured to continually  
change the assigned IP addresses to thwart people who want to run  
servers, so if you're looking for an _exact_ count this could mess up  
your summary.  
 
Try it manually and see what happens.  If things look promising you can  
pipe the PING responses into a file and then use a little Rexx to  
summarize the info.  
 
You can run DHCPMON (in \MPTN\BIN\) to get your IP address.
