Some motherboards will accept both older and newer types
of RAM to help ease the transition to the new paradigm,
oops, newer memory standards.

You may have noticed that memory packaging changes with
every generation. Faster and wider is the direction,
because memory speed is a major bottleneck in faster machines.
A lot of development work is focused here, as evidenced
by the rapid change in memory styles over the years.

As streaming video/data becomes more and more important
to computer applications, L1, L2, L3 memory caches become
less useful because the streaming data is used only once.

You may find a transitional motherboard that supports
both types, and even use that feature, but to realize the
full potential of the MB, you will need to use the latest,
fastest memory types. In the AMD world, DDR memory is up to
PC3200/3500 on a 400MHz bus these days, so PC2100 is quite
a bit older/slower. Doesn't seem to me like something to
spend my money on. Use the PC1xx memory if you already
have it. It's not as fast, but it's free.

If you buy PC2100 memory, it will be likely be pretty
obsolete when it comes time for a new computer motherboard.

To answer the question directly, the dual-style MB is really
only advantageous when you already have some older memory
you need to reuse. You should plan on replacing the system
memory every time you upgrade the MB/processor. It is only
an unusual situation that permits you to reuse the memory
during this kind of upgrade.
