After posting this question I discovered two program files in the MR2
directory. One, MR2ICE with no extension and generic icon and the other,
same size and also of type program file, MR2I.EXE with the right icon.
I deleted the one with no extension which was apparently the one a desktop
shadow pointed to (the shadow was deleted too). So far, it seems OK, but
too soon to tell as before it would sometimes run long enough to go
through all the mail without freezing. How did I get that second copy of
the program file with a different name? I never made a copy.

The version is 2.35, not 2.35a as I said above.
