I have an IDE based CompactFlash card reader. If I boot my computer without a CF card in the reader
it will not be found when inserted (this was noted in the instructions). If I boot with a card in the
reader it is useable and can be hot swapped for another card and still work. It's just that a card
needs to be seen on bootup. Maybe your SmartMedia setup needs the same.
