The President's Message

by Bert Langer

We were privileged to have a most interesting presentation at our February meeting. Rob Veitch, Chief Architect and Technical Manager of WATCOM, proved to be a talented and amusing speaker. His ability to make a complicated subject understandable gave all of us a new insight into the power and pleasures of REXX. WATCOM's VX-REXX Programming Language makes it possible for even beginning programmers to produce elegant and useful programs under OS/2. And not only did Rob do a bang-up job of presenting VX-REXX, he also gave away five copies!

And how did we distribute these copies? By using Mike Lavender's new raffle program, of course! For years, it has irritated me that even large computer clubs still run their raffles using those miserable little tickets that end up all over the floor. C'mon, folks, this is the computer age! If we can't solve even this little problem we surely are in big trouble. But Mike came to the rescue. Heeding my gripes, he posthaste programmed (using VX-REXX) a neat and colorful raffle program that proved to be just what the doctor ordered.

The New User Workshop needs more intensive publicity. To that end, we should redouble our efforts to distribute fliers at more locations. In addition, we will try to get announcements in the press and post messages on the major local BBSs a week or two before each meeting. If anyone needs fliers, please give me a call. This project needs your help.

The monthly software program disks sold at the main meetings are proving to be very popular. We will be bringing a stock of back issues to each meeting so new members can benefit from prior months' disks. At only $2.00 each they are an economical and convenient way to build up a library of proven public domain/shareware programs.

The national Comp-USA OS/2 day is now history. Many of our members participated in this event as OS/2 Teamers. I hope we can have a brief report at the March meeting as to what happened at each of the local Comp-USA. Team OS/2 activities are really a lot of fun - you get to talk to enthusiastic computerists hungry to gain some insight into OS/2, and you have an opportunity to show off some of your own talents and knowledge. There are Team OS/2 activities going on nearly every weekend. Just contact any Board member for guidance on how to participate.
